Abstract : T. S. Eliot won Noble prize for literature for his achievement in remarkable achievements as a pioneer within modern poetry. As Anders ?sterling put it in the Presentation Speech, T. S. Eliot, the initiator of a whole revolution in style within present-day poetry, is at the same time a coldly reasoning, logically subtle theorist, who never wearies of defending historical perspectives and the necessity of fixed norms for our existence. His literary theories include impersonal theory, objective correlative and new criticism.

He published “The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock” in 1917, which play an important role on his later theory of “Objective Correlative”. This thesis, taking “The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock”, tries to study how T. S. Eliot applied the objectification to the description of the emotion of the hero from such aspects as the quotation of allusions, the use of images with their symbolic meaning, and the analysis of the poem’s plot. The first chapter studies the objectification of the divided-self Prufrock according to the oppressive language and various images and illusions. In Chapter 2, it discusses the objectification of the hero’s cowardice and then hesitation, on the basis of the loose plot of the whole poem, rich and colorful rhetoric methods and images.
